Medal of Bravery
On October 6, 1988 in Ottawa, Ontario, Bernard Carter Descarie and René Nault came to the rescue of a woman and her three children, who were trapped in their burning home. Toxic fumes were being released when Mr. Nault broke down the front door and entered the house with Mr. Descarie. The smoke and the heat forced them to retreat after two attempts to reach an upstairs bedroom, where the occupants were confined. Mr. Nault finally located a ladder and climbed to the roof where he pried open the jammed bedroom window and helped the mother to safety. He was soon relieved by firefighters, who completed the rescue.
