Alan Pike, a retired police officer, intervened in the assault on an abducted woman on January 22, 1990, in Paris, Ontario. While driving his tractor along a bush road, Mr. Pike observed a man backing out of a car. The female victim followed and tried to run to the tractor but her abductor grabbed her, flung her to the ground and kicked her viciously. Mr. Pike drove towards them at full speed while the victim staggered to her feet, only to be knocked down again, kicked repeatedly and stabbed several times with a screwdriver. The aggressor ran to the car when Mr. Pike, wielding a sledgehammer, jumped from his tractor. He smashed a car window and attempted to swing himself inside but was forced to let go as the vehicle swerved towards a tree. Mr. Pike then brought the victim to a nearby farmhouse to await the authorities as the assailant fled, to be apprehended days later by the police.
