Early in the evening of July 31, 1989, 12-year-old Christopher Lee Stallard attempted to save an older boy from drowning near Big Gut Bridge in Pictou County, Nova Scotia. They had been wading in the water when the elder of the two was caught by the incoming tide and pulled out to deeper waters by the strong undertow. While another boy went for help, Chris Stallard swam out to the drowning youth. As they struggled together to regain the shore, they both disappeared under the water only to be found by rescuers a while later. Tragically, the older boy was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident and Chris Stallard, who was rushed to hospital, never regained consciousness and died a few days later.
