On March 1, 1987, Greg Strayhorn saved two children from drowning off Pompano Beach, Florida. While strolling the semi-deserted beach with a friend, he noticed a man and three children struggling in the high surf. Both youths swam out to help. The friend was able to reach the closest child and to bring him back to shore while Greg Strayhorn swam out farther to help the man and the other two children. He managed to grab onto both children and struggled against the undertow to bring them close to shore where a lifeguard helped him bring them to safety. Unfortunately, the man did not survive.
