Medal of Bravery
On January 12, 1993, in Lawrencetown, Nova Scotia, Messrs. Riggs and Stewart rescued a woman who was being stabbed by her estranged husband. Hearing screams from the street, the two young men ran onto their apartment balcony and saw the man and woman struggling below. Mr. Stewart immediately ran down the stairs, grabbed the assailant's arm and pushed him to the ground. At that moment Mr. Riggs arrived and put a choke hold on the man while Mr. Stewart wrestled the hunting knife from his hand and put it out of reach. Mr. Riggs held the assailant down until police arrived. Rather than waiting for an ambulance, Mr. Stewart drove the severely wounded woman to hospital.
