On April 2, 1993, in St-Hyacinthe, Quebec, Ms. Warlop saved a fifteen-month-old infant from a burning house. She was visiting friends when the veranda caught fire. After calling the fire department, the occupants left the house without realizing that the baby was still in an upstairs room. Ms. Warlop immediately went back inside the smoke-filled house and ran upstairs. Unable to go back down because of the thick, toxic smoke, she opened a window and tossed the baby into the arms of a waiting firefighter. She then jumped herself, landing in the snow.
