On August 20, 1994, in Scarborough, Ontario, Mr. Stuart, an off-duty firefighter, risked his life to prevent an assault on the intended victim of an armed robbery. He was sitting outside his residence when he noticed a car driving by without lights. As it pulled up in front of his driveway, four men, one of them armed with a baseball bat, got out and began pursuing another man. Without regard for his own safety, Mr. Stuart ran to help, placing himself between the victim and the attackers. The men jumped on him, beating him with the bat. Left in the street, semi-conscious and covered with blood, Mr. Stuart managed to drag himself to the side of the road. Others called for help and he was brought to hospital where he was treated for serious injuries.
