On August 14, 1994, Mr. Santo Domingo lost his life while trying to prevent his nephew from drowning in the Lake of the Woods at Kenora, Ontario. While picnicking on the beach, he heard the teenager scream from the water. The boy was experiencing difficulty swimming and was flailing his arms about. Mr. Santo Domingo immediately swam out and tried to grab onto the panicked youth, but was unable to do so. Two other people who had joined in the rescue attempt managed to bring the boy back to shore. Tragically, Mr. Santo Domingo sank below the surface and attempts to rescue him were unsuccessful.
