On July 10, 1994, Mr. Soth came to the aid of an RCMP constable held hostage at Lindell Beach, British Columbia. Driving along a rural road, he saw a roadside struggle in which the female officer was disarmed and threatened with her own service revolver. He approached and tried to reason with the gunman, distracting him while the constable moved away and used her portable radio to call for help. Despite the cocked weapon pointed at him, Mr. Soth continued in his attempts to calm the gunman. As they talked, Mr. Soth and the officer were able to get into his car and speed away. The gunman, who fled in the police vehicle, was later apprehended.
