On October 1, 1992, at Port Coquitlam, British Columbia, then Cst. Dickson of the R.C.M.P. risked his life to apprehend three robbers. He joined the high speed chase that followed the robbery and one of the robbers, who was armed with a handgun, shot at him repeatedly. Because the erratic driving and shooting were endangering the public, Cst. Dickson forced the robbers' vehicle into a rock wall. The three suspects ran from the car and the constable was able to apprehend one of them. He then went in pursuit of the armed man, who had taken refuge in a nearby pub full of patrons. The thief had refused to surrender to another officer on the scene and Cst. Dickson also demanded that the man put down his weapon. When the latter turned his gun on the constable with obvious intent to shoot, Cst. Dickson fired, fatally wounding the gunman.
