Symbolism

Green, gold and blue, the university’s emblematic colours, each has its own meaning linked to the region where the university operates. Blue evokes the rivers; green alludes to life-giving forests; and gold symbolizes the region’s rich gold deposits. Symbolic of excellence, gold also represents the success and contributions of the university community. In addition to evoking the snow and wide-open spaces of Northern Ontario, white embodies the image of a blank page waiting for inspiration and creativity.

Two black spruce trees eradicated their roots intertwined proper;

Symbolism

The black spruce, emblematic of the boreal forest, is renowned for its hardiness and ability to grow even in harsh climatic conditions. It symbolizes the university’s resilience and perseverance, underpinning a historic and enduring commitment to higher education in French. The stable growth of the black spruce is reminiscent of the continuous improvement of the student body and the university’s programs. Its adaptability evokes that of the university, rooted in its region and focused on the communities therein. Equal in number and size, the two trees emphasize fundamental relationships rooted in balance, dialogue and mutual benefit. Finally, the intertwined roots represent the bonds that unite the student population with the university.

These French words, meaning “Rootedness, knowledge, engagement,” represent the core values that the university upholds.

Symbolism

The Canada lynx, a species native to the boreal forest, is known for its excellent eyesight. This ability symbolizes the university’s commitment to anticipating the future and preparing its community to navigate an ever-changing world. The animal also represents adaptability, reflecting the university’s ability to offer an education that meets the needs of each individual. The taiga soil represents the topography of the boreal forest. The flowers allude to the trillium and fleur-de-lis on the Franco-Ontarian flag, symbolizing the university’s rootedness in this community. Finally, the gradually unfolding fiddleheads represent the university journey, marked by growth, transformation and fulfillment.
