Symbolism

The Canadian Heraldic Authority does not have confirmed symbolism for this emblem. The following comments are hypotheses only. The rock, the hand holding a dagger and the lymphad are taken from the arms of the chief of the Scottish clan MacLean. The maple leaf alludes to the Reverend MacLean’s Canadian identity, while the millrinds likely represent his great-grandfather, who was a miller in Scotland. The border is a Scottish method of differencing, the chequered variant indicating that the Reverend MacLean’s father was a third son.
