Blazon

Azure on a Canadian pale Gules edged Or three coronets of maple leaves Or and pearls Argent;

Symbolism

Red, gold and blue are the colours of Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, and of the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom, both of which Mr. Wong attended. The wide vertical band in the middle of the shield, called a “Canadian pale” in heraldry, alludes to the motto and Mr. Wong’s Canadian identity. The coronets, similar in form to that of a marquess, provide a play on his given name, Marcus. The maple leaves and the pearls of the coronets refer to his Canadian identity and his family’s roots in Hong Kong, known as the “Pearl of the Orient.”

Crest

Blazon

A demi-lion Or crowned of a coronet of maple leaves Or and pearls Argent, holding in its dexter paw a sceptre erablé Or and resting its sinister paw on a pearl Argent;

Symbolism

The lion resting its paw upon a pearl evokes the crest of the former Crown Colony of Hong Kong, from where Mr. Wong’s family immigrated to Canada. The sceptre surmounted with a maple leaf symbolizes the precedence of Canada in his identity.

Motto

Blazon

DEUS MARE DIVIDET;

Symbolism

Meaning “He shall part the seas,” this Latin phrase alludes to God’s parting of the Red Sea in the Book of Exodus. For Mr. Wong, it also refers to God’s deliverance from impossible situations in which he has found himself, and his confidence in God’s continued faithfulness in the future.
