The spouse of the governor general plays a tangible role in defining and carrying out the mandate of the governor general of Canada. The spouse may also develop a program of his or her own that complements and supports the overall goals of the mandate. He or she:
- takes part in official ceremonies and national celebrations
- welcomes foreign dignitaries
- plays an active role in the governor general’s visits in Canada and abroad.
The spouse is accorded the same precedence as the governor general and is also designated His or Her Excellency while in office. He or she is sworn in and automatically conferred with the membership of the Order of Canada at the Companion level and the Order of St. John as Knight or Dame.
