Following the sharing circle, the Governor General took part in a Powwow and delivered an address.

As a component of the Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement, the TRC is an independent body that oversees a process that provides former students and anyone affected by the residential schools legacy with an opportunity to share their individual experiences in a culturally appropriate manner.

The national events are part of the TRC mandate and are intended to engage and educate the Canadian public about the Indian Residential School system.

The Winnipeg event is the first of seven national events the TRC will hold over the next five years. Subsequent events will take place in Alberta, British Columbia, the Maritimes, Northern Canada, Quebec, and Saskatchewan.
