“It was with great sadness that my husband, Jean-Daniel Lafond, and I learned of the death of Doris Anderson, a true inspiration for all women.
Ms. Anderson left us on the eve of International Women’s Week. From an early age, she refused to accept that women could assume only traditional roles and wanted to create a world where women could aspire to make their mark in any field of endeavour they chose. As a journalist and writer, and particularly as the editor of Chatelaine, she advocated for women, putting the magazine at the forefront of women’s issues. She was invested as Officer of the Order of Canada in 1974 and promoted to the level of Companion in 2002.
She never shied away from condemning injustice, raising awareness or taking action. She was one of the women who began the debate on women’s independence over 50 years ago. She fought with passion and dedication so that the Charter of Rights and Freedoms guaranteed gender equality. Women today play a more significant role in our governments and have more power of decision because of this extraordinary woman.
May Doris Anderson’s memory serve as a reminder as we fight for a world where equality is valued above all else.
We offer our most sincere condolences to her loved ones in this difficult time. We will be forever thankful to have had her among us.”
