“It was with deep emotion that I learned, upon my return from Haïti, of the death of Captain Nichola Kathleen Sarah Goddard in a firefight in Afghanistan earlier today.

Captain Goddard’s death reminds us once again of the risks that our Canadian troops, both men and women, face every day in Afghanistan.

I have been privileged in the past few days to witness first-hand the pride and immense contribution of our Canadians soldiers in Haïti. I saw how the Haïtian people appreciate the day-to-day commitment of our Canadian troops to their struggle for security. Captain Goddard was equally devoted to this struggle, just like her fellow soldiers supporting the people of Afghanistan.

And so, on this sad day, I offer to Captain Goddard’s family, friends, and fellow soldiers in Manitoba and Afghanistan, my sincere condolences on behalf of all Canadians. Our thoughts are with them all at this time.”
