I am honoured to celebrate with you the centennial of The Royal Canadian Legion as governor general and commander-in-chief of Canada.

For a century, The Royal Canadian Legion has supported our veterans during and beyond their years of service, while keeping their stories alive and paying tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

I have always been proud of Canada’s commitment to supporting peace and security.

I know that, without the courage and sacrifice of our veterans, neither our society nor our democracy would have been able to prosper and thrive as they have.

The rights and freedoms we take for granted today could not have been protected.

And many of our international alliances would have been weakened.

Having worked in countries ravaged by war, poverty and humanitarian crises, I fully appreciate the immeasurable value of security, development and human rights, and the need to protect them at home and abroad.

Along with Canadians across the country, I understand the sacrifices made by those who choose to serve in the protection of these values, and who have done so with honour and bravery—from the trenches of the First World War to today’s emerging frontiers of security.

It is through remembering Canada’s contribution to world peace that we solidify our faith in a better world.

Today, on behalf of all Canadians, I would like to convey my profound gratitude to our veterans.

I also thank The Royal Canadian Legion for a century of helping generations of veterans to build fulfilling lives in their communities.

Beyond its commitment to veterans and their families, the Legion is a powerful force in villages, towns and cities across Canada.

Through the dedication of its members and volunteers, it supports seniors, creates educational and sporting opportunities for young people, raises funds and lends a helping hand to those in need.

We are deeply grateful for all your contributions to social justice and thank you for preserving the spirit of remembrance in our society.

Merci. Thank you.
