I was deeply saddened to receive news about the passing of the Honourable Marilyn Trenholme Counsell.

Dr. Trenholme Counsell represented New Brunswickers and Canadians with devotion and compassion. Her tireless efforts to promote literacy were key to the success of Born to Read, a province-wide initiative that continues to provide books to new families. She also served as a passionate leader of organizations supporting children and youth, and the arts.

Doctor, teacher, advocate, provincial minister, senator, Officer of the Order of Canada and lieutenant governor, in every role she served, Dr. Trenholme Counsell remained committed to the well-being of others.

On behalf of all Canadians, I offer my condolences to her family and loved ones.
