Message from the Governor General following the passing of Stephen Lewis

March 31, 2026

My husband, Whit, and I are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Stephen Lewis, an extraordinary Canadian politician, diplomat and humanitarian who dedicated his life to making the world a better place.

As Canada’s former ambassador to the United Nations (UN) and the UN special envoy for HIV/AIDS in Africa, Mr. Lewis brought steadfast moral clarity and urgency to one of the defining health crises of our time. He was appointed a Companion of the Order of Canada in 2002 for his distinguished humanitarian work, particularly his efforts regarding the UN and the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Africa.

Mr. Lewis was a tireless advocate for global justice, equity and human dignity. He leaves behind a legacy that will continue to inspire generations. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, colleagues and all those around the world whose lives he touched.
