Visit to the Citadelle of Québec - Day 1

The fifth edition of the Fall Celebration was held later in the afternoon. As part of the 20th anniversary of the Journées de la culture—and in keeping with its theme of music—activities for the whole family were on offer.

Their Excellencies are staying at the Residence of the Governor General at the Citadelle of Québec from October 2 to 5, 2016.

Visitors were able to sample culinary delights prepared by the Governor General’s chefs, like Rideau Hall's garden herb sables.

Visitors took part in a lively djembe workshop.

Young and old felt the rhythm of this African instrument.

The Jeunes musiciens du monde's performance had spectators clapping their hands in unison.

At the Musée Royal 22e Régiment, visitors could meet visual artists and see their interpretations of the views from the Citadelle.

A mixed media artist had his tools on display.

Visitors could learn more about the Citadelle's history by visiting the officers’ mess, home to the Royal 22e Régiment.

"There are so many ways to celebrate Quebec’s culture, heritage and creativity here and we’re so excited to share all this with you!", said the Governor General. "I’m certainly pleased that we can open our doors to you, and I invite you to come in and find out what this place has to offer."

Young acrobats and jugglers from the École de cirque de Québec entertained the crowd.

During this ceremony, the Governor General also presented the Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers to more than 20 recipients in recognition of their dedication and volunteerism.

The Association des scouts du Canada counts more than 16 000 French-speaking members across Canada. Its mission is to promote and support the integral development of young Franco-Canadians so they can reach their full potential as individuals and play an active role in society as members of their community.

Later in the morning, as chef scout of the Association des scouts du Canada, His Excellency honoured more than 100 of its members for excellence in Franco-Canadian scouting.

The inspection is a tradition that His Excellency enjoys.

As commander-in-chief of Canada, the Governor General inspected a Royal 22e Régiment quarter guard to mark his arrival at the Citadelle.

Representatives from the Canadian Heraldic Authority were on hand to showcase coats of arms and emblems. A calligraphy demonstration was also offered by Myriam Chesseboeuf, a local artist.
