Official Visit to Nova Scotia - June 26, 2018

Upon arrival at Government House on June 26, 2018, Her Excellency received military honours, including a 50-person guard of honour.

Her Excellency admiring the beautiful landscape as the Bluenose II sailed around the bay.

Bluenose II was built in 1963 and is a replica of the original schooner, which was a celebrated racing ship and fishing vessel. Each year, 12 youth are hired to be deckhands.

In the evening, Her Excellency boarded the Bluenose II to meet the crew. She witnessed first-hand the crew’s skill and teamwork as they sailed around the bay.

Her Excellency concluded the morning with a discussion on space with a group of Grade 6 students at the Discovery Centre in Halifax.

The visit was also the occasion for Her Excellency to discuss with Grand Keptin Antle (Andrew) Denny of the Mi’kmaq Grand Council.

During a meeting with the Honourable Stephen McNeil, Premier of Nova Scotia, the Governor General presented him with a photo of his province taken from the International Space Station.

Her Excellency met with His Honour the Honourable Arthur LeBlanc, Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia.

She also received a “Viceregal Salute” and a 21-gun salute from the Maritime Forces Atlantic, 5th Canadian Division and the National Band of the Naval Reserve.

One of the visit's main objectives was to learn more about Nova Scotia's thriving marine industries.
