Swearing-In Ceremony of Chief Justice of Canada
Her Excellency the Right Honourable Julie Payette, Governor General of Canada, presided over the swearing-in of the new Chief Justice of Canada, the The Right Honourable Richard Wagner, during a ceremony at Rideau Hall.
In the presence of Her Excellency, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, ministers and other distinguished guests, Mr. Wagner took the Oath of Office, the Oath of Allegiance and the Oath of the Members of the Privy Council.

It was then Her Excellency's turn to sign the oath books. As part of their constitutional duties, governors general, on the recommendation of the prime minister, approve the issuing of Letters Patent, under the Great Seal of Canada, to appoint the chief justice of the Supreme Court of Canada.

The Prime Minister also signed the oath books and was then followed by the Honourable Jody Wilson-Raybould, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada; the Honourable Jean-Yves Duclos, Minister of Families, Children and Social Development; the Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Canadian Heritage; and the Honourable Seamus O’Regan, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Associate Minister of National Defence.
