As part of Mental Health Week (May 1 to 7), Their Excellencies attended the 15th Champions of Mental Health Awards Gala in Ottawa on May 3, 2017. Before the reception, Their Excellencies posed with the group of 2017 Champions of Mental Health.

At the beginning of the gala, Ms. Lisa Crawley, Co-Chair of the Canadian Alliance on Mental Illness and Mental Health, delivered welcoming remarks. The annual Champions of Mental Health Awards recognize individuals and organizations whose outstanding contributions have advanced the mental health agenda in Canada.

Her Excellency Sharon Johnston delivered a speech: "So many of you here tonight have mentored me over the almost 7 years as I added my voice to the fight against stigma in mental illness. As the Johnston mandate at Rideau Hall comes to end, I want to thank all of you who have accompanied me on this mental health journey."

Despite her selective mutism, Lauren Whiteway has become a vocal advocate for her condition, which is a severe form of anxiety that causes someone to be unable to speak in certain social situations. Through her blog and video series, she has reached tens of thousands of people around the world, with a distinct focus on her own community. She also created a Facebook group to increase awareness and connect parents with children who have selective mutism in Atlantic Canada.

It was with great pride that Mrs. Johnston presented to her The Sharon Johnston Champion of Mental Health Award for Youth. This award is presented to a Canadian who is 21 years old or younger and who has shown leadership in his or her community by promoting mental health or mental illness awareness.
