State Visit - Visit to the Holy Sites

Their first stop was at the Dome of the Rock and Al-Aqsa Mosque.

The Western Wall, or “Wailing Wall”, is the most religious site in the world for the Jewish people.

Lastly, Their Excellencies visited the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.

The Church contains the two holiest sites in Christendom: the site where Jesus of Nazareth was crucified and Jesus's empty tomb.

Upon their arrival in Jerusalem, Their Excellencies visited three holy sites in the Old City.

The Dome of the Rock was built in the seventh century on the site of a Roman temple to Jupiter.

Upon arrival in Tel Aviv, Their Excellencies were greeted by Ms. Deborah Lyons, Canadian Ambassador designate to Israel, and by representatives of the Government of Israel.

It is the place where Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist.

It has been authenticated by all major Christian church leaders as one of the three holiest sites of Christianity, along with Bethlehem and Jerusalem.

On their last day in Jordan, Their Excellencies visited the Baptism Site of Jesus Christ, also known as ‘Bethany Beyond the Jordan’.

The Baptism Site is a legally protected national park.

Their Excellencies departed from Jordan. “Jordanians have caught the world’s attention with the brave and compassionate way in which they have reacted to events that continue to devastate the region. Canada is proud to stand by your side in helping to strengthen your communities and to build resilience,” said the Governor General when he met with His Majesty King Abdullah II bin Al Hussein.

His Excellency left a small note in the wall’s cracks.

Next, Their Excellencies visited the Western Wall.

The Al-Aqsa Mosque is the third holiest site in Islam.

Her Excellency also left a note.
