Rio 2016 Olympic Games - Day 1

Mr. Harnett gave a tour to Their Excellencies of the Olympic park.

On August 4, 2016, Mr. Curt Harnett, Team Canada's Chef de Mission for the Rio Olympic Games, welcomed Their Excellencies to the Athletes' Village.

"It’s particularly wonderful to see how this place, Canada Olympic House, will be a home away from home, a gathering place for athletes, and their family and friends," said the governor general. "Your dedication to excellence and your great generosity have strengthened Canada’s Olympic spirit and helped to make our country a great sporting nation."

On this occasion, Mr. Chris Overhault, Chief Executive Officer and Secretary General of the COC, and Mrs. Tricia Smith, President of the COC, presented Their Excellencies with the Canadian Olympic Jacket.

In the evening, Their Excellencies attended the ceremony marking the official opening of Canada Olympic House.

A peak at Team Canada Athletes’ Residence. Over 300 Canadian athletes are participating in these Games.

Their Excellencies met with the Canada's youngest female athlete, artistic gymnast Shallon Olsen (wearing black t-shirt).

Their Excellencies also met with medical staff.

Their Excellencies had the opportunity to interact with representatives from the Canadian Olympic Committee.

The Governor General spent time meeting with Team Canada volunteers.
