Vanier Medal Presentation

Mr. Wilson was recognized for his contributions to Canadian public service, which have had a lasting and positive influence on the lives of many Canadians. Considered a role model by his peers, Mr. Wilson is among Canada’s most respected business leaders. For the last five decades, he has also been a leader in Canada’s public service and voluntary sector.

The Governor General presented the 2014 Vanier Medal to Lynton “Red” Wilson, retired chair, president and CEO of BCE Inc., and chancellor emeritus of McMaster University. "Mr. Wilson's career is a shining example of public sector participation and leadership," said His Excellency. "An Officer of the Order of Canada, he is considered a role model for those who aspire to serve this country, whether in the public or private sector, or through philanthropy and volunteerism."

Mr. André Juneau, President of the Institute of Public Administration of Canada (IPAC), also spoke on this occasion.

The Vanier Medal, managed by IPAC, is one of the highest forms of recognition for Canadian public administrators. It was created in 1962, in honour of then-Governor General the Right Honourable Georges P. Vanier. The medal is awarded annually to a person who has made significant contributions to and has shown distinctive leadership in the fields of public administration and public service in Canada.
