Funeral of Jean Béliveau

Former Montreal Canadiens players Yvan Cournoyer, Phil Goyette, Guy Lafleur, Robert Rousseau, Serge Savard and Jean-Guy Talbot were the designated pallbearers of Jean Béliveau's coffin.

On December 10, 2014, His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, attended the funeral of hockey legend Jean Béliveau. Upon arrival at the Basilica Cathedral Marie-Reine-du-Monde in Montréal, he delivered statements to members of the medias.

Jean Béliveau played for the Montréal Canadiens from 1951 to 1971 and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1972. This great Canadian, who was promoted to Companion of the Order of Canada in 1998, was loved and admired by all.

Current Montréal Canadiens players also attended the funeral.

During the ceremony, the Governor General was beside His Worship Denis Coderre, Mayor of Montréal (left), and His Honour the Honourable Pierre Duchesne, Lieutenant Governor of Quebec (right).

Montréal Canadiens Owner, President and CEO Geoff Molson also paid tribute to the hockey legend.

Former teammate Ken Dryden bid farewell to his longtime friend.

The ceremony was presided over by His Excellency Archbishop Christian Lépine, Archbishop of Montréal.

Former teammate and CEO of the Montréal Canadiens Serge Savard also delivered an address.

Former teammate Yvan Cournoyer delivered an emotional address.

At the end of the ceremony, the Governor General offered his condolocences to Jean Béliveau's spouse Élise Couture.
