Diamond Jubilee Medal Presentation to Sidney Crosby

A new commemorative medal was created to mark the 2012 celebrations of the 60th anniversary of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s accession to the Throne as Queen of Canada. The Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal is a tangible way for Canada to honour Her Majesty for her service to this country. At the same time, it serves to honours significant contributions and achievements by Canadians. The medal program is part of the Jubilee year celebrations, organized by the Government of Canada.

His Excellency presented the Diamond Jubilee Medal to Sidney Crosby. Deputy Secretary of Honours Emmanuelle Sajous read the following citation: "Sidney Crosby is one of our best hockey players and is already among the National Hockey League elite. In the heart of Canadians, his greatest accomplishment may always remain the gold-medal winning overtime goal he scored for Canada at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games. He is an inspiration and a role model to young athletes. His contributions to youth and sport have brought great honour to Canada, particularly through philanthropic initiatives and his Foundation."

His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, met Canadian NHL player Sidney Crosby at the Bell Sensplex, in Ottawa, on January 26, 2013. Sidney Crosby, who is the captain of the Pittsburgh Penguins team, had a practice with his teammates on the eve of their game against the Ottawa Senators scheduled on January 27.
