Visit to Guatemala - Day 1

Upon their arrival in Guatemala, Their Excellencies the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, and Mrs. Sharon Johnston were greeted by Mr. Harold Caballeros, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Guatemala.

Her Excellency then met with hospitalized children. The foundation brings much-needed assistance and hope to children and families who are unable to pay for treatment. Its integral program includes the use of internationally approved treatments, intensive care, infection management, nutrition and palliative care, and supports the development of specialized activities in the psychosocial area. Additionally, it provides transportation and housing for families in need.

The Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI) is supporting Ayúdame a Vivir this year with $20,000 towards its nutrition program, which will ensure patients receive healthy and appropriate meals during their treatment.

Her Excellency Sharon Johnston visited the facilities of the Fundación Ayúdame a Vivir, which raises funds and provides necessary resources for the operation, maintenance and growth of UNOP, Central America’s leader in the treatment of pediatric cancer. Dr. Federico Antillon gave her a tour of the facilities.

The Governor General then proceeded to the Rafael Landívar University for a round table on food security. Upon his arrival, he was greeted by University Rector Mr. Rolando Alvarado (left).

The Governor General delivered opening remarks in front of government authorities, academics, donors, and representatives of private sector and civil society organizations.

Following the discussion, His Excellency visited an exhibition of projects supported by the Government of Canada on food security, nutrition and rural development.

His Excellency toured the exhibition with Mr. Rolando Alvarado, Rector of the University, and Ms. Christina Laur, Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) Team Leader in Guatemala (left).
