The Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Trail

Their Excellencies the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, and Mrs. Sharon Johnston participated in the renaming of a section of the Trans Canada Trail designated The Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Trail.

As patrons of the Trans Canada Trail, Their Excellencies joined by Mr. Labarge unveiled a plaque in honour of the renaming of this section of the trail that links the National Capital Commission’s Ottawa River Pathway to the Gatineau Park Pathway.

The Trans Canada Trail is a non-profit, registered charity. It promotes and assists in the development and use of the Trail in every province and territory, and provides funding to local trail builders to support the development of trails.

His Excellency also said a few words: “As patrons of the Trans Canada Trail, Sharon and I are delighted to see this portion of the trail network named in honour of Her Majesty The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. The Diamond Jubilee is cause for celebration, as is the ongoing development of the Trans Canada Trail. In fact, the location of this new commemorative plaque could not have been better chosen.”

Today, more than 16 800 kilometres of trail have been developed. When completed, the Trail will stretch 23 000 kilometres, from the Atlantic to the Pacific and to the Arctic oceans, linking 1 000 communities and all Canadians.
