130th Anniversary of The Royal Society of Canada

As honorary fellow and patron of the RSC, His Excellency congratulated its council members and new fellows on reaching this important milestone, and underlined how the organization’s initiatives and intellectual leadership are helping to build a smarter and more caring country.

In honour of The Royal Society of Canada’s (RSC) 130th anniversary, His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, attended the Opening Ceremonies of the Annual General Meeting at the Ottawa Convention Centre on November 16, 2012. Executive Director of RSC Mr. Darren Gilmour delivered opening remarks.

Vice-President of the University of Calgary Dr. Edward McCauley also said a few words.

RSC President Mrs. Yolande Grisé delivered closing remarks. Founded in 1882, the RSC is Canada’s national academy of distinguished scholars, artists and scientists. The RSC recognizes academic excellence and outstanding contributions to Canadian intellectual culture; advises governments and organizations; and promotes a culture of knowledge and innovation in Canada. The RSC’s three academies collectively consist of nearly 2 000 fellows, men and women who are selected by their peers for outstanding contributions to the natural and social sciences, in the arts and in the humanities.

His Excellency unveiled the reading room named in honour of Mr. Roderick McDonald, former RCS President.
