His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, attended the Celebrating Inner-City Community Connections event, during which the University of Manitoba presented highlights of its Connecting to Kids Report, conducted by the faculties of Medicine, Social Work, and Kinesiology and Recreation Management. Dr. David Barnard, President of the University of Manitoba, offered welcoming remarks.

The Award encourages youth to be active, to participate in new activities, and set and achieve goals in four different areas: Community Service, Skills Development, Physical Fitness, and Adventurous Journey. Gold Award participants must also complete a Residential Project consisting of voluntary service to a community for five consecutive days.

In the afternoon, His Excellency presented Gold Awards to 25 young people from Winnipeg and the surrounding areas for their achievements in pursuing The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Programme. In his address, the Governor General congratulated all recipients on their personal accomplishments and acknowledged their outstanding dedication to the cause.
