Founder of Desjardins Group, Alphonse Desjardins is well-known for having created the first caisse populaire in the Americas. Created over a century ago, the Desjardins co-op model can now be found in some 20 countries.

Their Excellencies visited the historic Maison Alphonse-Desjardins in Lévis, Québec, where the first caisse populaire Desjardins co-op was founded. They learned about how the caisse populaire was founded, the life of its co-founders and the reason why they created the Caisse Desjardins.

Following their visit to Maison Alphonse-Desjardins, Their Excellencies opened an account at the Caisse populaire Desjardins de Lévis, where they became honorary members, thus continuing a long tradition established by seven previous governors general who also opened accounts at this branch.
