The Governor General was officially welcomed to Malaysia by His Majesty The Yang di-Pertuan Agong, King of Malaysia, during a ceremony with full military honours in Parliament Square, Kuala Lumpur.

Built in 1908, the Masjid Jamek Mosque is situated at the confluence of the Klang and Gombak rivers, and is one of the oldest mosques in Malaysia.

His Excellency gave these final words as part of his keynote address at the University of Malaya: "Here in Malaysia, you have such wonderful teachers, as well as a rich history of higher education. I was delighted to learn about the great and exciting strides you have made in recent times in learning and in fostering diversity and multiculturalism. These are some of the key ingredients to success in today’s world. I applaud your hard work and dedication."

During the visit to the University of Malaya, the Governor General delivered a keynote address to some 200 students, researchers, university partners and industry representatives. A panel discussion on “Transferring University Research to the Private Sector to Make ‘Smart’ Cities and Innovative Communities” and a question period with Canadian delegates and Malaysian counterparts followed the keynote address.
