Official Visit to Saskatchewan - Day 3

Their Excellencies then visited the Wanuskewin Heritage Park in Saskatoon. The Wanuskewin area contains some of the most exciting archaeological finds in North America. To date, there are 19 pre-contact sites within the valley and two historic sites, making this region the longest-running active archaeological site in Canada.

His Excellency believes that education and innovation are key components in establishing a smart and caring nation, and has incorporated them into the three pillars of his mandate as the 28th governor general of Canada.

"In making this call to service in the cause of building a smarter, more caring Canada and a fairer, more just world, I am counting on your help. From the social innovation of Medicare to the sub-atomic insights of the synchrotron, Saskatchewan is known for its leadership and ingenuity across Canada and around the world. And to those of you who are new to this university, this province or this country, your ideas and your energy are not only welcome—they are essential."

During his visit to the Unviversity, His Excellency addressed students. His speech was webcast live on the University's website and the Governor General's official website.

Following his speech, the Governor General answered questions from students.

Before leaving the province, His Excellency made a final stop to the University of Saskatchewan. Upon his arrival, the Governor General was greeted by University President Mr. Peter Mackinnon.

Executive Director of Saskatoon Community Foundation Trevor Forrest (left to the Governor General) presided over the discussion. The foundation’s mission is to enhance the quality of life for people in the community by strategically granting funds to other charitable organizations: hunger relief, community theatre, adult literacy services, summer environmental camps and programs for seniors.

On the final day of his official visit to Saskatchewan, His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, participated in a discussion with representatives from the Saskatoon Community Foundation. His Excellency is patron of Community Foundations of Canada.

Their Excellencies also inaugurated the new exhibit entitled Mistatim (I Honour You). Curator Tyrone Tootoosis (left) took them on a tour of the exhibit. The theme of the park is one of interpretation: visitors explore the Plains culture, gaining a better understanding of Saskatchewan’s First Nations peoples and their common heritage.

Their Excellencies had the opportunity to witness a traditional dance before meeting with chiefs and Elders.

Her Excellency Sharon Johnston met with staff from Interval House and Adelle House, two emergency and temporary shelters for women and their children who require safe accommodation. During her visit, she also had the opportunity to meet with women who benefit from the variety of services offered by the two shelters.
