Official Visit to Saskatchewan - Day 2

His Excellency congratulated recipients of the 2011 Premier’s Award for Excellence in the Public Service, who were honoured for their outstanding on-the-job contributions to the provincial government and to their fellow citizens. During a reception in Saskatoon, the Governor General said: "I have always had a profound respect for the public servants of this country, and this gives me a wonderful opportunity to convey my admiration to all of you. I think the public service of Saskatchewan well and truly exemplifies the motto of this province—Multis e gentibus vires, “From Many Peoples Strength.”

His Excellency listened to students as they shared their opinions and views on the future of Aboriginal youth in Saskatchewan.

The First Nations University of Canada was established as the Saskatchewan Indian Federated College in 1976, through a federated partnership with the University of Regina. The university offers post-secondary education in a culturally supportive First Nations environment.

The tour was followed by a discussion between Their Excellencies and students from the First Nation University of Canada.

Accompanied by Dr. Vianne Timmons, President of the University of Regina and Dr. Doyle Anderson, President of the First Nations University of Canada, Their Excellencies toured the First Nations University of Canada

Their Excellencies then returned to the Legislative Assembly for a meeting with the Honorable Brad Wall, Premier of Saskatchewan. His Excellency signed the guest book.

As commander-in-chief of Canada, His Excellency is committed to recognizing the importance of Canada’s military at home and abroad.

Youth were also on site to listen to His Excellency's address: "Sharon and I have been delighted to meet veterans, but we have also been humbled to meet military families, including those who have lost loved ones. We cannot imagine their grief, but we can share in the pride that they feel for one who served Canada with distinction."

During their visit, Their Excellencies had the opportunity to speak with veterans from the Second World War, from Afghanistan and from international peacekeeping missions.

Their Excellencies, along with the Premier of Saskatchewan (left), then visited the Saskatchewan War Memorial. The Memorial honours men and women in uniform who have perished, as well as nursing sisters for their contributions during conflicts.

During a welcoming ceremony at the Legislative Assembly in Regina, Their Excellencies the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, and Mrs. Sharon Johnston were greeted by the Honourable Brad Wall, Premier of Saskatchewan.

The Governor General received military honours, including the “Viceregal Salute”, a 21-gun salute and a flypast, and conducted an inspection of the guard of honour.

In the afternoon, His Excellency visited the Hutterian Brethren of Lajord Colony to experience their way of life, learn about their technological advances in the area of crop harvesting, and discuss the potential economic impact these technologies could have on the province.
