His Excellency awarded the Bronze Governor General’s Academic Medal to an outstanding student at the Kugaaruk School.

Their Excellencies had the unique opportunity to work with Elders and students on the design and construction of a sea Kayak, using traditional tools.

An elder member of the kayak-building workshop provided a demonstration on how to carve a paddle out of wood.

Mr. Tony Immingark, coordinator of the kayak workshop, demonstrated to Their Excellencies how kayaks in Kugaaruk would have traditionally been made of caribou skins and bones. No nails were used in the kayak construction. Caribou sinew was used to lash the kayaks together.

The kayak-building workshop in Kugaaruk is an initiative designed to rekindle the kayak design skills known to the community Elders.
