Sylvia Grinnell Territorial Park is located about one kilometer from Iqaluit, Nunavut's capital. The picturesque scenery is accented by the Sylvia Grinnell River that separates the park in two as it meanders through the tundra.Inukshuks can be found at various locations within the Park.

The present landscape of the Park was sculpted by immense ice sheets from the Laurentide Glaciation, which retreated from this part of the Arctic approximately 7 100 years ago. Ice some 400 metres thick scoured the land and left deposits on the south-eastern sides of ridges and escarpments. Postglacial beaches are visible as horizontal terraces along the hillsides.
