Official Visit to Newfoundland and Labrador - Day 2

Their Excellencies visited Provincial Aerospace Limited, which started as a small flight school with fewer than 10 employees in 1974, and is now a world leader in airborne and maritime surveillance. Their Excellencies toured an operational hanger that includes a training facility, a Department of Fisheries and Oceans-contracted surveillance aircraft, and a Department of National Defence Dash 8 that is currently going through a 20-year, mid-life upgrade.

His Excellency met with recipients of the Student Innovation Fund, and viewed their projects and initiatives in various fields such as arts, music, science, engineering, humanitarian aid, social justice, and media.

The Student Innovation Fund provides an opportunity to work collaboratively with students in developing student-initiated projects that enhance the quality of life at Memorial University of Newfoundland. The purpose of this fund is to reinforce student innovation, empower students to productively respond to student issues and foster feelings of ownership, involvement and connection to the mission and community of Memorial University.

The FFTNL is a non-profit organization that advocates for and promotes the rights and interests of the Francophone and Acadian community of Newfoundland and Labrador. Its mission is to promote Newfoundland and Labrador’s Francophone culture and to facilitate its development.

On Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day, Their Excellencies met with members of the Fédération des francophones de Terre-Neuve et du Labrador (FFTNL) at the Centre scolaire et communautaire des Grands-Vents, in St. John’s. They visited the facility and discussed the importance of Francophone culture with members.

Their Excellencies also had the opportunity to meet with His Worship Dennis O’Keefe, Mayor of the City of St. John’s.
