His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, honoured teachers, along with other outstanding Canadians, for furthering an interest in and understanding of Canadian history and heritage, at the Governor General’s History Awards ceremony.

His Excellency awarded the Governor General’s History Awards for Excellence in Teaching to Shantelle Browning-Morgan, of Walkerville Collegiate Institute in Windsor, Ontario, for piloting an innovative course that illuminates the history of a unique group of people who settled in the local region to escape slavery in the United States.
