Ceremony of Remembrance at the National Aboriginal Veterans Monument
On the occasion of National Aboriginal Day, Their Excellencies participated in the 10th annual Ceremony of Remembrance at the National Aboriginal Veterans Monument in Ottawa. The Honourable Steven Blaney (middle), Minister of Veterans Affairs, also attended the ceremony.

"Since Canada’s earliest days, the First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples have given much to forge and sustain peace within our own borders and around the world," said His Excellency. "They have overcome cultural challenges to help shape Canada into what it has become today. And they have served and sacrificed with honour, distinction, courage and resolve in ways that conveyed time-honoured traditions and deeply-held beliefs."

The monument and commemorative ceremony honour the contributions of thousands of Aboriginal veterans who gave their lives for their country, and all those who have served throughout Canada’s military history.

Located in Ottawa’s Confederation Park, the National Aboriginal Veterans Monument was unveiled 10 years ago, on June 21, 2001, by the Right Honourable Adrienne Clarkson.
