REGIONAL VISIT TO SASKATCHEWAN - Day 2

The Governor General visited the Canadian Light Source (CLS) located on the University of Saskatchewan campus. The CLS is committed to being a world-leading centre of excellence in using synchrotron light for research in environmental, material and life sciences; promoting innovative industrial partnerships; and engaging in scientific and educational outreach.

Following the visit at the Canadian Light Source (CLS), the Governor General participated in a discussion marking the 50th anniversary of the Canadian Bill of Rights. The theme of the discussion was “Women’s Rights are Human Rights” and was held at the University of Saskatchewan.

The Canadian Bill of Rights was enacted by the Parliament of Canada on August 10, 1960, under the leadership of Prime Minister Diefenbaker, who had been campaigning for the protection of human rights since he became a member of Parliament in 1945. Concern for civil liberties had surfaced during this time, partly in response to the atrocities and human suffering that occurred during the Second World War. Further impetus for human rights protection under domestic law came in 1948 with the adoption of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which had a clear and significant influence on the Canadian Bill of Rights.

"The relevance and vitality of our democracies depend on the full recognition of women’s rights. When women demand more justice, it is so that society as a whole benefits from the contribution of every member. When women fight against poverty, it is so that our children have enough food to eat and more decent living conditions."

The Governor General then visited La Ronge in north Saskatchewan, where she had the opportunity to sit down with members of the Lac La Ronge Indian Band Council and community representatives.

The discussion focused on the challenges the community faces as well as key actions that have been implemented to better improve the residents' quality of life.

In honour of the Governor General's visit to the community, cultural performances were presented by youth.
