Official Visit to Alberta - Day 2

His Excellency also met with members of the Federation of Calgary Communities to discuss the benefits of philanthropy and the importance of building a smart and caring nation.

Upon his arrival at City Hall, His Excellency met with His Worship Naheed Nenshi, Mayor of Calgary. The Governor General then headed over to City Hall School, where he delivered a speech to young students.

The Governor General also had the opportunity to meet with and speak to veterans about the personal challenges they have faced following their years of military service.

The Calgary Poppy Fund Veteran’s Food Bank assists veterans, their widows and dependents in obtaining medical and dental care, shelter and food.

His Excellency spoke with staff who prepare food hampers for the ones in need.

During a visit to the Calgary Poppy Fund Headquarters, His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor and Commander-in-Chief of Canada, helped pack a food hamper going to veterans.

Through its 146 member groups, the Federation is collectively the largest voluntary organization in Calgary, engaging the efforts of over 20 000 volunteers annually.

He also listened to the members’ success stories and heard about the different volunteer models they have implemented within the city of Calgary.

To mark the Governor General's official visit to the province, His Worship Naheed Nenshi, Mayor of Calgary, presented His Excellency with a White Hat which he wore proudly.
