Official Visit to Alberta - Day 1

The school uses video games and video boards in classrooms to educate students from Grades 2 to 6.

Their Excellencies the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada,and Mrs. Sharon Johnston visited the St. Mary Professional Learning School, which initiated an innovative pilot project in 2009.

The Governor General, accompanied by his wife Her Excellency Mrs. Sharon Johnston, delivered an address to the 83 members of the Legislative Assembly.

"Albertans have a long history of coming together to help one another. You place great importance on community, and this can be seen all across the province, in your rural communities, and in your cities and towns. You are also an extremely generous province, as evidenced by your volunteer associations and philanthropic endeavours. Albertans are known for caring and supporting their neighbours and I encourage all of you to continue your efforts as we move towards a smarter, more caring Canada."

Their Excellencies the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, and Mrs. Sharon Johnston met with His Worship Stephen Mandel, Mayor of Edmonton, and Mrs. Lynn Mandel at City Hall.

The Governor General of Canada visited the Canadian Forces Base in Edmonton to present the Commander-in-Chief Unit Commendation to the 1st Battalion of the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI) Battle Group.

The Governor General presented the scroll to LCol Fletcher (left) and LCol Hope (right). The Commander-in-Chief Unit Commendation was created on July 3, 2002, to recognize outstanding service by units of the Canadian Forces in extremely hazardous circumstances in an active theatre of operations.

During the ceremony, His Excellency also presented the pennant of the Commander-in-Chief Unit Commendation.

The Commander-in-Chief Unit Commendation was presented to the 1st Battalion of the PPCLI Battle Group "For exceptional determination and courage during relentless combat in Afghanistan, from January to August 2006." Private Campbell raises the flag.

On November 29, 2010, His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, addressed members of the Legislative Assembly.

His Excellency thanked the Premier of Alberta for this wonderful gesture.

Their Excellencies attended a luncheon, during which the Premier of Alberta announced two scholarships, named in honour of the Governor General, for students attending the universities of Alberta and Calgary.

Their Excellencies the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, and Mrs Sharon Johnston met with the Honourable Ed Stelmach, Premier of Alberta, and Mrs. Marie Stelmach at Alberta’s Government House.

The Lieutenant Governor is showing His Excellency the coin he tossed at the 98th Grey Cup Championship on November 28, 2010.

During their official visit to Alberta, Their Excellencies the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, and Mrs Sharon Johnston met with Their Honours the Honourable Donald S. Ethell, Lieutenant Governor of Alberta, and Mrs. Linda May Ethell.

His Excellency delivered an address to the Battalion: "On behalf of all Canadians, I thank you for your devotion to duty, for your enduring service and for your professionalism in the field. I am now honoured to present the Commander-in-Chief’s Unit Commendation to the 1st Battalion of Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry Battle Group. Congratulations."

The Governor General took the time to speak with students on the importance of education.
