Meeting with the Armed Forces Council at the Citadelle of Québec

As commander-in-chief of the Canadian Forces, the Governor General held a meeting with the Armed Forces Council.

The Governor General then presented scrolls to the newly promoted generals and admirals. “General and flag officers, I am counting on you to provide not only solid leadership, but also support for our soldiers and their families. May the ideal of justice and freedom continue to sustain your commitment. And may it also serve to inspire your colleagues and the soldiers under your command.”

The Brigadier General Lawrence E. Aitken, of the Navy, received his scroll from the Governor General. Promoted to Brigadier-General in March 2009, he was appointed Acting Commander of Canadian Defence Academy.

In June 2009, the Commodore Hans W. Jung was promoted Director General Health Services and appointed Commander of the Canadian Forces Health Services Group/Surgeon General and Queens Honourary Physician.

The Brigadier General D.W. Thompson, of the Army, assumed command of Joint Task Force – Afghanistan serving in Kandahar from May 2008 to February 2009.

General Walter Natynczyk, the Chief of the Defence Staff, is responsible for the conduct of military operations and for the readiness of the Canadian Forces to carry out the tasks that Parliament assigns through the Minister.

Her Excellency also handed a scroll to Brigadier General R. D. Foster, who is Deputy Commander of Force Generation 1 Canadian Air Division Head Quarter.
