Governor General makes second visit to Afghanistan - September 8 and 9, 2009

Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, Governor General and Commander-in-Chief of Canada, visited Afghanistan to show her support for and solidarity with Canadian soldiers and the people of Afghanistan. The visit took place on September 8 and 9, 2009. Upon her arrival at the Kandahar military base, she paid her respects to fallen Canadian soldiers in Afghanistan before laying a flower on the cenotaph.

The Governor General visited a school in Kandahar.

As Commander-in-Chief of Canada, Her Excellency saluted the incredible work conducted by the Canadian Forces in Afghanistan. She addressed Canadian soldiers with a message of solidarity before discussing with them their role within the mission.

Her Excellency recognizes here a military woman for her exemplary work conducted during her deployment in Afghanistan.

The Governor General and Commander-in-Chief of Canada conducted an inspection of the guard of honour on the Kandahar military base.

During her inspection, Her Excellency took the time to speak to the Canadian soldiers who are working hard to provide a peaceful and safe country to the people of Afghanistan.

During her visit to the Kandahar military base, the Governor General awarded the General Campaign Star and the General Service Medal to many Canadian soldiers. The General Campaign Star and the General Service Medal have been created as means to recognize - in a timelier manner - those who serve in operations in the presence of an armed enemy.

During her visit to the school, Her Excellency met and discussed with young Afghan girls.

School children were happy to welcome and meet the Governor General.
