On October 18, 2005, Premier Gary Doer officially welcomed Their Excellencies at the Manitoba Legislative Building. In her speech, the Governor General stated: “ I would like this first official tour that I am undertaking in Canada to express the thoughts of one citizen among equals, whose basic objective is to allow your words again to be given proper heed — because from your words come knowledge and recognition, summoning us to dream and impelling us to act.”

On October 19, 2005, His Excellency Jean-Daniel Lafond took part in a lunch time discussion about media arts and civic engagement with Manitoba-based filmmakers, videographers and producers and later met with students at the Collège universitaire de Saint-Boniface for a discussion on cinema and the portrayal of reality.

Their Excellencies visited the Children of the Earth High School in Winnipeg, Manitoba, on October 20th, 2005. In her exchange with the students, Her Excellency stated: “The efforts you are making to promote aboriginal traditions, experiences and languages enrich all Canadians and give hope to those who, like yourselves, are working hard to preserve their culture around the world. You are models for us all. You are models for the world.”
