"All over the country, thousands of volunteers offer their talents and time on a daily basis to improve our collective well-being. Without any expectation of recognition and with a determination that we can only marvel at, they help so many Canadians reach their full potential.

Every volunteer plays an important role in building a healthier society. Through their actions, volunteers show us that anything is possible when we work together and they remind us that an “everyone for himself” attitude has no place in our world today.

During this National Volunteer Week, I want to honour all those Canadians who serve others—often in the shadows—and who, in so doing, make a huge difference in the world. The values of altruism, generosity and solidarity that you possess revive the glimmer of hope that saves so many people from sinking into solitude and helplessness. The smiles on the faces of those you help are themselves proof of the invaluable contribution you make.

I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for caring about your fellow citizens, your communities and your society. You are models of sharing and openness for the next generation."

Michaëlle Jean
