"This year, we celebrated the 90th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge, a turning point in our country’s history. In many ways, we can say that the esteem in which we are held worldwide is due in large part to the courage and sacrifice displayed that day by the Canadian Forces.
And the Canadian Forces still answer the call today, standing shoulder to shoulder with the international community in hot spots around the globe, where peacekeeping and peacebuilding are more important than ever. I am very impressed by their unflagging dedication to the ideal of justice and freedom. They are a source of inspiration to us all.
I was with them recently in Kandahar, and witnessed the dedication and cooperation between military personnel and humanitarian agencies. I was touched by their determination and their sense of duty in helping Afghans achieve their aspirations and their right to security and stability, which are key conditions for their development.
I have also talked with their families, who all spoke proudly of the commitment of their daughters, their sons, their sisters, their brothers, their wives, their husbands, their mothers, their fathers. I know that each and every Canadian appreciates their incredible devotion. Canadians from across the country have told me how much they admire them, and have asked how they are doing.
So on this Canadian Forces Day, on their behalf, I salute all the members of the Canadian Forces, as well as their families, friends and loved ones. I assure you that the whole country is grateful for the remarkable work you are doing to make our world a better place."
